Excitations in the Halo Nucleus He-6 Following The Li-7(gamma,p)He-6 Reaction

A broad excited state was observed in 6-He with energy E_x = 5 +/- 1 MeV and width Gamma = 3 +/- 1 MeV, following the reaction Li-7(gamma,p)He-6. The state is consistent with a number of broad resonances predicted by recent cluster model calculations. The well-established reaction mechanism, combined with a simple and transparent analysis procedure confers considerable validity to this observation.Comment: 3 pages of LaTeX, 3 figures in PostScript, approved for publication in Phys. Technical Design Report for PANDA Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMC)

    Get PDF
This document presents the technical layout and the envisaged performance of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMC) for the PANDA target spectrometer. The EMC has been designed to meet the physics goals of the PANDA experiment. The performance figures are based on extensive prototype tests and radiation hardness studies. The document shows that the EMC is ready for construction up to the front-end electronics interface

First measurements of the ^16O(e,e'pn)^14N reaction

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the first measurement of the ^16O(e,e'pn)^14N reaction. Data were measured in kinematics centred on a super-parallel geometry at energy and momentum transfers of 215 MeV and 316 MeV/c. The experimental resolution was sufficient to distinguish groups of states in the residual nucleus but not good enough to separate individual states. The data show a strong dependence on missing momentum and this dependence appears to be different for two groups of states in the residual nucleus. Theoretical calculations of the reaction using the Pavia code do not reproduce the shape or the magnitude of the data.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, Accepted for publication in EPJ

Upgrade of the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer for Mainz MAMI-C

The Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer at Mainz has been upgraded so that it can be used with the 1500 MeV electron beam now available from the Mainz microtron MAMI-C. The changes made and the resulting properties of the spectrometer are discussed.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figure

In-medium modifications of the ππ\pi\pi interaction in photon-induced reactions

Differential cross sections of the reactions (γ,π∘π∘)(\gamma,\pi^\circ\pi^\circ) and (γ,π∘π++π∘π−)(\gamma,\pi^\circ\pi^++\pi^\circ\pi^-) have been measured for several nuclei (1^1H,12^{12}C, and nat^{\rm nat}Pb) at an incident-photon energy of EγE_{\gamma}=400-460 MeV at the tagged-photon facility at MAMI-B using the TAPS spectrometer. A significant nuclear-mass dependence of the ππ\pi\pi invariant-mass distribution is found in the π∘π∘\pi^\circ\pi^\circ channel. This dependence is not observed in the π∘π+/−\pi^\circ\pi^{+/-} channel and is consistent with an in-medium modification of the ππ\pi\pi interaction in the II=JJ=0 channel. The data are compared to π\pi-induced measurements and to calculations within a chiral-unitary approach

A study of energy partition during arc initiation

    Get PDF
This paper presents an analysis of energy partition among various physical processes during the formation of an electrical arc. Experimental work was conducted to accurately determine the energy delivered into the discharge. The transient voltage and current waveforms have been measured. An analytical model was developed which allows estimation of the energy partition in the discharge to be performed in order to evaluate risks associated with different energy components: thermal, kinetic-acoustic and light. Approximately 60% of the electrical energy is converted into mechanical work, subsequently contributing to the pressure rise. The results obtained will help in studies of safety considerations regarding hazards associated with plasma discharges in transient faults/sparks and during the onset of arcing faults (flash and blast hazards)

Statistics of Magnetic Fields for OB Stars

Based on an analysis of the catalog of magnetic fields, we have investigated the statistical properties of the mean magnetic fields for OB stars. We show that the mean effective magnetic field B{\cal B} of a star can be used as a statistically significant characteristic of its magnetic field. No correlation has been found between the mean magnetic field strength B{\cal B} and projected rotational velocity of OB stars, which is consistent with the hypothesis about a fossil origin of the magnetic field. We have constructed the magnetic field distribution function for B stars, F(B)F({\cal B}), that has a power-law dependence on B{\cal B} with an exponent of ≈−1.82\approx -1.82. We have found a sharp decrease in the function F(B)F({\cal B})F for {\cal B}\lem 400 G that may be related to rapid dissipation of weak stellar surface magnetic fields.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, accepted Astronomy Letters, 2010, vol.36, No.5, pp.370-379, contact E-mail: [email protected]

The isospin structure of photoproduction of pi-eta pairs from the nucleon in the threshold region

    Get PDF
Photoproduction of πη\pi\eta-pairs from nucleons has been investigated from threshold up to incident photon energies of ≈\approx~1.4~GeV. The quasi-free reactions γp→pπ0η\gamma p\rightarrow p\pi^0\eta, γn→nπ0η\gamma n\rightarrow n\pi^0\eta, γp→nπ+η\gamma p\rightarrow n\pi^+\eta, and γn→pπ−η\gamma n\rightarrow p\pi^-\eta were for the first time measured from nucleons bound in the deuteron. The corresponding reactions from a free-proton target were also studied to investigate final-state interaction effects (for neutral pions the free-proton results could be compared to previous measurements; the γp→nπ+η\gamma p\rightarrow n\pi^+\eta reaction was measured for the first time). For the π0η\pi^0\eta final state coherent production via the γd→dπ0η\gamma d\rightarrow d\pi^0\eta reaction was also investigated. The experiments were performed at the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator using an almost 4π4\pi coverage electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. The total cross sections for the four different final states obey the relation σ(pπ0η)\sigma(p\pi^0\eta) ≈\approx σ(nπ0η)\sigma(n\pi^0\eta) ≈\approx 2σ(pπ−η)2\sigma(p\pi^-\eta) ≈\approx 2σ(nπ+η)2\sigma(n\pi^+\eta) as expected for a dominant contribution from a Δ⋆→ηΔ(1232)→πηN\Delta^{\star}\rightarrow\eta\Delta(1232)\rightarrow\pi\eta N reaction chain, which is also supported by the shapes of the invariant-mass distributions of nucleon-meson and π\pi-η\eta pairs. The experimental results are compared to the predictions from an isobar reaction model.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Lett.
